Past Continuous
Действие длилось в какой-то момент прошлого. Часто это фон, на котором случилось что-то короткое.

was — I, he, she, it. were — you, we, they. Дальше просто добавь -ing.
КЛАССИЧЕСКАЯ ПАРА
длинное действие → Past ContinuousShe was cooking…
короткое действие → Past Simple…when he called.
два длинных → whileWhile I was reading, she was drawing.
